First Cabinet Meeting, 19 June 2005

The VSA held a meeting in June. This was the very first gathering of its cabinet members who came to discuss activities for the upcoming school year. It was also an opportunity for all the officers to introduce themselves and get to know each other.

The meeting was originally scheduled in room 200 of Clinton Hall, but was later had to move to room 213. During the two-hour meeting, president Kenny Phúc Nguyễn gave everyone the overall plan for the 2005-06 school year. Everyone then provided their ideas, comments, and asked questions to clarify any "fuzzy" issues.

The meeting was quite productive. As always, the outline for the 2005-06 included some major events such as Asian Festival, Tết Celebration, New Year Magazine, Sporting Events, etc. And there were also some "optional" activities that had been brought up for discussion such as the VSA picnic, Halloween get-together, Karaoke night, Thanksgiving / Christmas party, as well as several others.

But for the time being, the one sitting on top of the VSA's agenda was fund raising. At the beginning of every school year, this has almost always been an issue. Everyone knew that the lacking of money would mean a lacking in activities. Not because the VSA would spend an outrageous amount of money for anything, but the organization would prefer to spend enough to meet the minimum level of success expecation. No one wanted to have a boring year. But everyone realized that we can't have a "fabulous and exciting" year if there was not enough money to fund these activities.

There were a few ideas going around on how to raise money. Some officers suggested that we do outdoor car washes, while others suggested that we do garage sales. One member on the cabinet even thought about selling goods on Ebay to raise money for the organization. The meeting was conducted in a brainstorming format, and it brought alot of exciting to the cabinet officers.

When the meeting was over, everyone went outside to take a group picture. Afterwards, the officers decided to meet at Lollicup, a popular coffee-and-tea hangout at 21st St. North and Waco. Here, the favorite drink seemed to be the Taro flavored (Chè Khoai Môn), which is a sweet beverage mixed with some kind of soft and chewy jelly beans (not sure if that was the correct description).

At 7pm, the group parted. Eveyrone bid farewell and was looking forward to seeing each other again.
