Before You Let Me Break Your Heart

Before you let me break your heart, please let me explain
By letting me in your world, I’ll likely bring you pain

If you have a fragile heart, do not knock at my door
I’m no good at fixing those, I might just break it more

I think it’s fair to warn you what experience shown
I get scared when I get close, I’m much better alone

If you’re not up for a challenge, then please turn around
I never keep my promises, I will just let you down

I am not a devil and it’s not a game a play
I could fall in love but more likely I’ll walk away

I don’t want to scare you off but I want you to know
It is possible that one day I will let you go

Although for no one I could promise this heart of mine
But for all I know; you could be breaking it this time

Just please read this precaution and be sure before you start
Ready for the outcome before you let me break your heart

Pay Phone

I was drinking a cup of coffee and reading my book.  I see him come inside, coat dripping.  He slogs across the floor to the nearby payphone.  He drops in a quarter and punches numbers.
“It’s Daddy”, he says.
I look out the window, still listening.
“Is Billy there?  Sleeping?  Wake him up for me would you?  What?  Don’t want to talk to me?  Tell Mommy this is Daddy’s weekend.  Baby, put Mommy on the phone.”
A pause
“No, I need to talk.  Yes, Mommy needs to talk to Daddy.”
His body sags
He says, “Hello?”
Head bent, he hangs up, then pulls his coat collar close and steps back out into the rain.
I take a sip of coffee and return back to my book.
